Hunting was fine. Saw two my first day out, too far away and too small to shoot, though. Not a very impressive season, only 2 does. Dad says that the wolf population is too big up by them now, all the game has been killed off. Rob, the sister's boyfriend, did pretty well. He'd never hunted before, but went out and took the hunter's safety corse and got an out of state license, so he spent a lot of money to bond with the guys. I like the guy, so I tried to give him hints and make it fairly easy to understand what was going on. While doing that, I noticed that there is a unique language that is used by hunters, at least those up in northern Wisconsin. There are tons of terms that one needs to know to understand how the party is hunting and where. Terms such as "draw," "finger," and "neck," describe portions of the forest. One must also know tree types, such as birch, popple (poplar), spruce, oak, and tamarack, to know where one needs to go to sit or walk to. There is hunting terms, such as watcher, posting, stand, and driver to master. Plus, it helps to know local landmarks, especially those that don't exist anymore (such as, the sawmill that ended operation before my father was out of high school, or the night pasture where grandpa put the cows, or the stand where uncle Tom shot that buck that one year).

The annual family bowling was fun. Didn't get to dance nearly as much as I did last year. Instead I got roped into bowling. However, my closest cousin's son decided to latch onto me this year. He would even pick me over his grandma or his mom. I was able to bowl a 121 with a toddler on my hip, which I think is pretty good.

Thanksgiving was fine also. Same crowd, minus grandma, of course. That was kinda hard, at least for me. Not sure how it affected the rest of the family, no one mentioned anything. There has been talk about moving the meal down to uncle Jim's next year, mostly because the hunting is better there. It'd be lots closer to Madison, but I don't know. Seems to be the ending of an era, or something. One annoying part was me being the only single person there, except for uncle Dan, but he's almost 50 and probably not going to find anyone.

Did get a sauna in this year. I was a little worried, since Thursday was so cold that we couldn't start one. If the weather is too much below zero, it just takes too much wood and too long for it to get hot. Got to roll in the snow also (this is where you get really warm--the sauna gets above 100 C-- and then run outside, naked, and roll in the fresh snow, never roll in a snow with a crust on top, one gets cuts in areas that are uncomfortable).

Had an interesting dilemma playing scrabble with mom, sis, and her boy. Since me being gay is still a topic that isn't brought up much, I wasn't sure if I wanted to use the word "queer." I tried real hard to get "queen" to work, but couldn't. Since it was worth 28 points, my competitiveness won out. Which was a good thing, since I ended up winning the game.

I got to try my hand at wood burning also. My uncle was going out to the Dakotas to hunt some pheasants, and since the ranch he stays at doesn't charge him to stay there and hunt, he made them a pine coffee table. They also have buffalo at this ranch, so I burned a bison and two birds on the top. I've never used a wood burning kit before, it was quiet cool.

random: watching the Wisconsin at Hawaii football game, the shot of the UW-Madison players joking around in grass skirts was very sexy
