I am not a fan of the "fantasy" stories where a modern day situation is objectified by giving it a medieval/fantastical covering. I'm not sure I'm describing that well. Two examples are the current podcastle story I'm listening too, where its basically a grass roots / rural attempt at over throwing corporate America. The other was where the peasants of a medieval village hire an accountant, trained by monks to fight the horrible beast that is tax law, to take on the corrupt dealings of the wizard-governor and free them of his oppressive taxing. :eye roll:

Really not a fan. I wish Podcastle would stick to dragons/elves/magic, and not try to be edgy. I want the high-fantasy stories in my fantasy podcast.

Yeah, high fantasy should be just that... the only exception I'll make is where a character is somehow transported from modern day to a fantasy realm and is all "WTF?". That's ok. But it's not a coat of dragon paint over modern day/political issues, which is what I think you're getting at.

I also enjoy alternate present stuff (the Harrison Witch series, for example), but that doesn't even attempt to bill itself as high fantasy.

The only sort of modern day fantasy I like is stuff like American Gods, where beings from a more fantastic time are still living among us, just hiding. Kinda Buffy/Angel like. I guess that's more gothic horror, but when you are dealing with ancient pantheons, there is not enough gothic feel to give it that label, IMO.

Unfortunently this podcast is the catch all, it's two sister podcasts, psuedopod (horror) and escapepod (sci-fi) are better defined, so podcastle gets the left overs. It's basically a speculative podcast, with a heavy dose of fantasy.
