radlilim: (BtVS Riely Try Me - obsessedmuch)

This week and next week I have been on call for jury duty. I've never done it before and I think it would actually be fun, except I have all those non-refundable tickets to New York for next Friday. Well my number was called up so I have to report on Monday. I will go and if it looks like I will be picked I will try to explain my situation to someone, nicely. I read up on it a bit more today and I guess yesterday I needed to submit a request in writing to try and get out of it do to my plans. But they called up like 200 numbers, so I probably won't get picked. If I do I hope they will let me out, or promise me that the trial will be over by Thursday.

I hate skipping out, this is one of those things that is important to our society and I would like to do it. Maybe I'll be picked again. Interestingly enough, my dad is on call in his area for the same period.

Odd that, unless it was "pick names with K week." *grin*

Without fail, every time I got picked for jury duty, it was the week after I was moving out of the area (twice back to school in the fall and once to England). I don't know how they pick them, but I always could get out of it by sending in the form saying that. I'd really like to get picked some time when I can attend.

Yeah, I saw that. I'm not sure what you do in that case, just that I never had trouble getting out of it, and I'm not sure if I always got them in time. Maybe call them and tell them that something's come up? Or call them the Friday before and tell them that an emergency is going to take you out of town, like a funeral or something?

If you're lucky you'll just get a one-day trial some schmuck who can't ask someone else to drive them home. If you do get called in to a room tomorrow they will usually lead off with the expected length of the trial and ask if this will be a problem for anyone. If it's expected to inconvenience you they will send you back out to possibly be picked for another trial. The long and short of it they should be able to help make sure you catch your plane Friday, so no worries about missing the deadline on the form. ;)
